All about biking on the Toronto Islands.

If you’re looking for a nice relaxing bike ride in Toronto, head over to the Toronto Islands (yes, it’s a combination of many islands, but most are easily accessible by bike once you get there by ferry) - or sometimes referred to as Toronto Island Park. You’ll basically forget you were just in the hustle and bustle of downtown Toronto and will escape to something completely different, especially when on the south side of the Islands.

The Terrain

You can get around the Islands mostly on paved paths and roads. Along the south side, there’s a boardwalk. Now I’m making it sounds like a concrete (paved?) jungle over there — I assure you it is not!

Pointers

Centre Island is the most ‘commercialized’. There’s a kids amusement park, food stands, wide paved paths, etc. Ward’s Island is where you’ll find the houses (yes, people live on the Island), but you can bike through the ‘neighbourhood’ no problem. Hanlan’s Point, known for the clothing-optional beach, also has the airport (Porter Airlines, etc). On the south side of the Islands you’ll find a boardwalk that’s right up against the water, and a pier lookout. You’ll find some beaches along there, as well. Biking from there towards Hanlon’s Point, you’ll pass a light house.

I didn’t even see close to all the nooks and crannies, so there’s more than I’m writing about here. In fact, there’s a PDF map you can check out before you head out!

How to Get There

You can take your bike on the ferry, no problem. The ferries go to three places: Centre Island, Hanlan’s Point and Ward’s Island, with Centre Island being the most popular and hence has a much larger ferry with lots of seating (The Ward’s Island ferry not so much — You’re basically standing). Since each are easily accessibly by bike from the others, any choice will do. As mentioned, the Centre Island ferry is the largest ferry, and has seating on two levels.

Catch the ferry at the foot of Bay Street (Bay & Queen’s Quay West - by the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel). The fare, at the time of this post, is $6.50 — which gets you back to the ‘mainland’ as well. They’ll take your ticket when going to the Islands, and thus not on the way back.

<iframe width="940 height="500" frameborder="0" scrolling="no" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" src="http://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&q=bay+%26+queens+quay+west&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Queens+Quay+W+%26+Bay+St,+Toronto,+Toronto+Division,+Ontario&z=14&ll=43.641115,-79.376787&output=embed">

You can buy your ticket from one of two automated machines (that take coins and credit cards — I only saw two: there could be more) or from a booth manned by staff. A word of caution on that point: On busy days the line ups for the booths can be horrendous (especially just before the summer season if the weather is nice). As for the machines, I couldn’t seem to get them to work (I wasn’t the only one), and there didn’t seem to be any instructions on how to use them properly. Thus, going at a somewhat off peak time may be your best bet.

I’m currently watching justin.tv/loo_loo and it’s fairly decent. No buffering issues at all. There you have it: If you don’t have access to TSN, check out the Justin.TV stream and watch some great CFL action. Of note, all Friday night CFL games will be streamed live from TSN’s website. For non-Friday games, try the stream mentioned above.

One thing many fans can’t stand is diving (and by football, we’re talking ‘soccer‘!). Diving has become some what of an art form - and one that tarnishes the ‘beautiful game’ for sure. Even in World Cup 2010 we’re seeing some ‘incredible’ dives. Fans like myself absolutely can’t stand it. It totally goes against the code you see in other sports such as rugby and hockey.

Below are some of ‘impressive’ football dives, as found on YouTube. We only included ones you could actually see. YouTube football dive uploads are notorious for being of such poor picture quality. These are some of the decent quality ones. One could say the dives are ‘quality’ as well. You decide.

Watching the World Cup, I’ve been wondering how the groups are decided. The way it ended up it seems that each group has one or two strong teams, with two lesser teams. With this, I figured it couldn’t be a total random draw. Imagine if Brazil, Spain, Italy and the Dutch made up one group? It never happens. Why is that? How are the World Cup groups decided?

Before the country drawing is made, countries are placed into ‘pots’. The host nation and the top 7 teams (this year based on 2009 FIFA rankings) make up Pot 1. Thus for World Cup 2010 this pot consists of South Africa, Brazil, Spain, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Argentina, and England. The final 3 pots (Pot 2, Pot 3, Pot 4) are organized by geography. Thus…

Pot 1: Top 7 Seeds + Host Country
Pot 2: Teams from Asia, North America and Oceania
Pot 3: Teams from Africa and South America
Pot 4: Teams from Europe

The order the countries are picked, is the order they are placed into groups (A to H). There are a few exceptions, however. For World Cup 2010, they wanted to maintain some geographic diversity, and thus Brazil and Argentina were kept apart from any other South American teams. Ditto for Africa: South Africa was kept apart from other African teams. On top of that, there were a couple other minor tweaks. You can replay the drawing on FIFA’s website.

Hope that helps! I asked many a soccer fan lately and no one seemed to have an answer.

Back in the day soccer players would actually get a cap for every game they played internationally, however this is no longer the practice. They name ‘cap’ however has stuck.

Bars where Dutch soccer fans gather in Toronto.

Toronto, being hugely multi-cultural, is a fun city to be in during the FIFA World Cup. Most call it ‘football’ - Canadians call it ‘soccer‘ and the Dutch call is ‘voetbal’ - but no matter what you call it there’s a bar in Toronto that is home base for the country you are cheering for. One nation that doesn’t have a typical section of town in Toronto is the Dutch. Immigrants from the Netherlands are known for integrating into Canadian society more than many nationalities. Thus, there is no ‘Little Holland’ or ‘Little Netherlands’ in Toronto. However, there is still a place in Toronto to cheer on the Oranje. While most Toronto bars will likely be showing all Netherlands matches (they are on CBC after all), two bars in downtown Toronto stand out as bars where Dutch supporters gather, wearing orange, and cheering team Nederland.

Betty’s on King East (240 King Street East, just east of Sherbourne). Betty’s has a great selection of draft beer, a nice patio out back and half decent grub. You can’t go wrong with your favourite pint and a pizza at Betty’s.

Hemingway’s in Yorkville (142 Cumberland Street, just east of Avenue Road). Hemingway’s has many rooms to choose from, with a small patios out front and a larger one out back.

For World Cup 2010, there are two (really) early games for the Dutch in the first round. Thus, with the 7:30am start times, some from the group Dutch Treat are gathering in Liberty Village. I’m not sure if this is only for those who are part of the group or not, but you can find out more details from Dutch Treat.

Where else are Dutch supporters gathering? Please let us know by commenting below. One more thing: Hup Holland.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa starts on June 11, 2010 to much excitement around the world including here in Toronto where it can be sometimes classified as a frenzy. There is a 6 hour time difference between Toronto and South Africa so a majority of us soccer (futbol) fans are supposed to be at work during most of the games.

This year all games will be broadcasts on CBC so people without cable will be able to enjoy the games using direct to air TV signals available in both standard definition and high definition!

If you are caught at work or don’t have access to a TV what are you options to watch the World Cup online?

Good news, CBC is also streaming every game LIVE on CBC Sports between June 11 and July 11!

Some alternatives to CBC that will have live streaming available online are:

Univision Futbol

myp2p.eu

Sopcast

Another baseball season is upon us and for us in Toronto that means the Blue Jays are back in town. Well, they will be after this upcoming week.

The Jays open the season in Texas on Monday April 5th (2:05 PM on Rogers Sportsnet). After three in Texas and three in Baltimore the Jays have their home opener on Monday April 12th hosting the Chicago White Sox (7:20 PM on Rogers Sportsnet). That caps off 10 days in row with games at the Rogers Centre.

I’ll admit I don’t go see a lot of Jays games, but when I do the one thing I do look forward to is the 7th Inning Stretch. The main reason is the Jays theme song (although now ‘redone’ for whatever reason). The original was by The Bat Boys (”OK Blue Jays”).

Oh, you want to sing along. The lyrics reproduced, below.

—

OK BLUE JAYS - The Bat Boys

You’ve got a diamond
You’ve got nine men
You’ve got a hat and a bat
And that’s not all
You’ve got the bleachers
Got ‘em from spring ’til fall
You got a dog and a drink
And the umpire’s call
Waddaya want?
Let’s play ball!

Is that a fly ball
Or is it a seagull
Coming in from the lake
Just to catch the game?
It’s the last inning
Our guys are winning
Dave’s put down a smoker
A strike
And you’ve got no doubt
(You’re out!)
Waddaya want?
Let’s play ball!

(Chorus)
Okay (okay)
Blue Jays (Blue Jays)
Let’s (Let’s) Play (Play) Ball!

It’s a beautiful evenin’, fans
At the ballpark
When the game starts
Warm summer breezes
Sun’s goin’ down
And it’s all dark
At the ballpark
But that’s okay… it’s a night game

(Chorus)

Bring on the White Sox
Bring on the BoSox
Bring on the Brewers
The Rangers and the Yankees too
We’ll beat the Indians
We’ll beat the Tigers
We’ll beat the A’s so bad it’ll make
Billy blue
Waddaya want?
Let’s play ball!

(Chorus)

—

There are some variations, however, including the current one they run at the Rogers Centre
