One thing many fans can’t stand is diving (and by football, we’re talking ‘soccer‘!). Diving has become some what of an art form - and one that tarnishes the ‘beautiful game’ for sure. Even in World Cup 2010 we’re seeing some ‘incredible’ dives. (more…)
Watching the World Cup, I’ve been wondering how the groups are decided. The way it ended up it seems that each group has one or two strong teams, with two lesser teams. With this, I figured it couldn’t be a total random draw. Imagine if Brazil, Spain, Italy and the Dutch made up one group? It never happens. Why is that? How are the World Cup groups decided? (more…)
If you’re watching the World Cup and are not a regular soccer watcher, you may be wondering what ‘caps’ means. As in, each player has so many caps. I had no idea so had to look this up. (more…)
Yeah, we’re a little late to get to this, but if you haven’t seen it, check it out below. I was a huge lego fan as a kid (still am, just don’t partake!), so I absolutely love this. Enjoy. (more…)
Toronto, being hugely multi-cultural, is a fun city to be in during the FIFA World Cup. Most call it ‘football’ - Canadians call it ‘soccer‘ and the Dutch call is ‘voetbal’ - but no matter what you call it there’s a bar in Toronto that is home base for the country you are cheering for. (more…)
The 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa starts on June 11, 2010 to much excitement around the world including here in Toronto where it can be sometimes classified as a frenzy. There is a 6 hour time difference between Toronto and South Africa so a majority of us soccer (futbol) fans are supposed to be at work during most of the games. (more…)
I was just checking out the turf indoor soccer registration options for the next season over on the Toronto Sport and Social Club site. This season they included links to view a video. I was thinking ‘great idea!’. What a great way to check out the indoor venues before you sign up (as, lets face it, there was always a big difference between Soccerworld and, lets say, Waterside). Click the video aaaaaaaaaaaand it’s just a generic indoor soccer video. Click the video for the next registration venue - same video. So, a great idea with poor execution. They’ve got some new-ish Toronto indoor soccer fields listed this year (Varsity, Lamport w/ a bubble, etc.) and it would have been great to see how they are. Maybe next year?
Yep, we’re now officially at 200 active Toronto player profiles on sportaholik.com Toronto! This means 200 Toronto players that have sports and levels of play filled out on their profiles. Two-hundred players that you can contact to join your game or team for recreational sports. The sportaholik.com Toronto database now includes over 80 Toronto soccer players, nearly 40 Toronto hockey players, nearly 40 Toronto basketball players… with more on the way, of course. Apparently, water polo is not too popular, though. So, we’re off to a good start here with sportaholik.com Toronto, with other cities across Canada slowly being rolled out as well. Thanks for joining us!
sportaholik.com connects recreational sport playing adults, however it’s always interesting to see what is going on with Canadian kids and their participation in organized sports.
Canadian children are getting lazier, as participation in organized sports declined significantly among the elementary-school-aged set over a 13-year period, suggests a Statistics Canada study.
New data suggests that only 47% of children in Toronto and Vancouver are sport participants. Also, those of higher income families were more likely to be playing organized sports than those of lower incomes. The top three sports across Canada, for children between 5 and 14 years of age, were soccer, swimming and hockey. More at cbc.ca.
That’s right. Some in Toronto can’t get enough of the game of soccer that they’re playing it anywhere they can… Even when commuting on the subway. This isn’t quite what we had in mind when we gave you the option to search for ‘transit accessible‘ games, but…
Does it give you the urge to play soccer? Find a Toronto soccer game near you!
