Why Do Toronto Dutch Fans Gather at Betty’s on King East?

Dutch soccer fans in Toronto have gathered at Betty’s bar on King Street East for years now — to watch the Oranje in World Cup and Euro soccer matches.

But, why Betty’s? Are the owners dutch? Is it a “Dutch Bar”? Nope. According to a National Post story, it’s simply this:

Manager Annmarie Andersen says it’s down to one man who, many years ago, stood up on the bar on King’s Day (the Dutch national holiday) and belted out the country’s national anthem “I’ve been here for 15 years, and I can honestly tell you there is no other reason,” she said. “I don’t know how word spread, but it did.”
